School History

Scoil Bhreandáin Naofa, Mullach, named after the patron saint of Clonfert diocese, was opened in the year 1939 as clouds of war gathered over Europe. Situated between the towns of Ballinasloe and Loughrea, it was built by Mr Keane.  Traditionally it served a farming community.

Here are some photos from the past. The first two were taken in 1926 outside the old Mullagh NS. The third is from 1947. It was taken outside what is currently the old part of the school. The fourth is of the 1983 Confirmation class.

Mullagh School was renovated by Hubie Hardiman in the late 80’s. The flat roof was repaired, teak windows replaced the old ones and the old turf shed at the rear of the school was knocked down and replaced by the girl’s toilets. The dividing wall was removed from the yard and a new shed was erected in the early 90’s by Frank Hardiman.

A new school building with three classrooms, an office, staffroom and special education rooms was added in 2007. The old part of the school now houses a Montessori school and a general purpose hall. Outside we added a tennis court and basketball court to our hurling pitch and our parents painted markings on the playground to further enhance our play area.

Many famous hurlers have gone through Mullagh School’s portal, Iggy Clarke and Pete Finnerty to name but a few. Many of our past pupils were part of the Mullagh camogie team that won the All-Ireland Final in 1997. Mullagh School is particularly proud of the fact that two of its past pupils, Derek Hardiman (hurling) and Sinéad Cahalan (camógie) were awarded All-Stars in 2005. Sinéad captained the Galway Senior Camogie team that were narrowly beaten in the 2008 All-Ireland final and won her second all-star award that year. We were so proud to see her lift the O’ Duffy Cup. Another past pupil, Karen Kennedy, was a member of the All – Ireland Intermediate Camogie winning team and in 2017, past pupil Tegan Canning was a member of the Galway U-16 Camogie team who won the All-Ireland.

With its state of the art facilities Scoil Bhreandáin Naofa looks forward to welcoming many future generations of children from the parish of Mullagh and beyond.
